Second-year junior Tyler Hannay made an incredible, record-breaking start to the local road cycling season at Ballaugh on Sunday morning.

The 17-year-old from Ramsey set a stunning time of 50 minutes and 40 seconds to not only break the local record for a 25-mile time trial, but also establish an allcomers fastest time for the distance on-island.

It is more than a quarter of a century since the flying Scotsman, former world hour record and individual pursuit world champion Graeme Obree, established a time of 51min 41sec during 1995 Manx International Cycling Week.

That time stood throughout the remaining editions of Cycling Week, the last being in 2003 when former British champion Stuart Dangerfield did a 52.14s to defeat local rider Andrew Roche by 48s.

Max Walker became the local record holder (on island) last summer with 50.58 on a day when Hannay established a new junior record of 51.46.

But this latest performance is little short of phenomenal and it makes one wonder what time the local teenager is truly capable of.

Over the winter he was signed up by the Flanders Color Galloo Cycling Team in Belgium.

’I felt good from the off but tried to pace it well with the wind,’ said Tyler.

’Conditions were tough, but I left everything out there and was happy with my ride.

’Getting the record with that time made me extra proud of my effort and gave me good confidence for some racing hopefully in the UK and Europe with my new team,’ added Sunday’s Spring 25-mile time trial winner Tyler Hannay.

It would be interesting to see how he would go at the National 25-mile champs in July.

Former record holder Walker had to settle for the runner-up spot in the Manx Road Club ’Spring 25’ on the Ballaugh-based course.

Riding for the second year in the colours of Trinity Racing, he set a time of 51.43 to finish almost two minutes clear of former professional Peter Kennaugh Jr, who is now concentrating on triathlon.

James Harrison, recently signed for ASP TT Nancy, was a close fourth, edging out triathlete Will Draper of the host club by 10 seconds.

The top-12 riders all went under the hour on the course, which started at Rhencullen and involved Sulby Bridge, St Jude’s, the Ballamoar/Jurby/Summer Hill loop and the out-and-back stretch to Ramsey on the rough and ready Jurby Road - anything but a pure A Road course used for similar events in the UK.

Jess Carridge (Manx Viking Wheelers) was the top woman in 61m 45s, more than five minutes clear of triathlete Carrie Wernham, with Emily Looker (MRC) a close third.

Best of the first year juniors were Ralf Holden and arch-rival Zac Walker - a mere five seconds apart in their maiden rides for the Utmost Isle of Man Junior Cycling Team.

Best youth was Niall Colquitt of Team RL360 in an impressive sub-61 minute time and best Youth B rider was James Kinrade of the same club.

A special mention for over-70 Eddie Fryer of the host club, going round in 81m 57s.
