Will Draper won round two of the new-look Bikestyle handicap road race league at Jurby airfield on Thursday evening.

The event, organised by Manx Viking Wheelers, attracted a total field of 81 riders split into two races.

Each race was then split down into groups.

The elite event included former Team Sky and Bora-Hansgrohe rider Peter Kennaugh, and Mark Christian in his second appearance in the colours of the Canyon dhb p/b Soreen pro team.

The pair injected added pace into the scratch group which set off at lightning pace.

Within three laps they had the front group in their sights, with numerous riders being shelled out of both bunches with rapid regularity.

A brisk north-westerly made things all the tougher on the southerly leg of the 1.7-mile course, but the pace down the back straight with the wind behind them raised the pace to around 30mph in the bunch.

The strongest 10 from the scratch group bridged the gap to the main bunch with around four laps remaining, but didn’t hang round for a breather, storming past into the overall lead.

Kennaugh pushed hard going into the bell lap, but that was quickly nullified and six went away on the final lap into the cross-wind, with Draper trying hard to make a break of his own off the front.

He was quickly reeled back in and the group stayed together for another half-lap to the northern end of the airfield, where Draper had a second dig.

This time he didn’t look round until he approached the finishing straight, and when he did he was relieved to see that he had a decent enough gap to hold on to the line.

He took the win by a margin of two seconds from round one winner James Harrison, Leon Mazzone, round one runner-up Adam Kelly, Max Walker and Christian.

’It was a good, hard race, more consistent than last week,’ said the 20-year-old triathlete.

’I knew that I wouldn’t be strong enough in a sprint, so I had to go it alone into the wind.’

Amelia Sharpe rode strongly throughout the race and held on with a smaller group of men from the original front group to finish 16th, in close company with Mark Horsthuis and Ross Thorley.

The earlier Sport race also splintered, but once again it was the youngsters in the distinctive Team RL360 vests who proved strong in the final shakedown.

The longmarkers held on until they were caught by the women’s group. Groups three and four combined and with a handful of laps remaining Ian Kelly and Stuart Grunsell had a dig off the front in a bid to break up the race.

But it inevitably came down to a gallop finish and young Niall Colquitt of group four won it by a length and a half from the impressive Nicola Quaye (Gp2), week one winner Tyler Annis, Simon Harding, John Sanderson and Thomas Kneen (all Gp4).

Jessie Carridge (Gp2), was the second female in seventh spot, followed by Sacha Horsthuis, Kirree Quayle and Emily Looker (all Gp2) in 10th, 12th and 15th respectively.

l Round three is on Thursday week, July 23.
